The role of Transport as a tool for social and territorial cohesion was highlighted today by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, at the Informal Council of Ministers of Transport, held in Barcelona, ​​within the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU, and highlighted the initiatives for the strengthening the role of Greece in the trans-European Transport Network.

In particular, according to a press release, during the Informal Council, Mr. Staikouras thoroughly analyzed the role of transport in achieving high, sustainable development, but also in strengthening social cohesion.

He highlighted the need, at the European level, to promote sustainable connectivity and at the same time to strengthen smart mobility, with the aim of shaping a competitive, safe, accessible and affordable transport system.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport presented to his counterparts the relevant initiatives undertaken by the Greek government in this direction, with a typical example being the modernization of the bus fleet in urban transport in Athens and Thessaloniki.

He also described the actions to promote electric mobility and enhance transport safety.

Mr. Staikouras emphasized the national efforts made to upgrade the resilience of national infrastructures, in order to highlight and strengthen the role of our country in the new trans-European transport network.

In addition, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport had the opportunity to specify the policies of the Greek government during the consecutive bilateral meetings he had with the European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Valean, and the Vice-President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport of Italy, Matteo Salvini. as well as with the Czech Minister of Transport, Martin Kupka, the French Under-Secretary of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion responsible for Transport, Clement Bonn, and the Portuguese Minister of Infrastructure, João Galaba.
