Greece and Turkey are very close to signing an agreement on immigration and dealing with its consequences, as reported by the SKAI TV envoy in New York.

Athens and Ankara consider this specific issue important for the development of the region, while the Turkish side also seems to share Greece’s concerns.

Government sources have confirmed that substance deals are in the works between the two sides. As they reported: “The context of the Greek-Turkish rapprochement is defined and has a specific milestone, namely the Supreme Cooperation Council on December 7 in Thessaloniki, which has symbolic and political significance. We are going step-by-step and as we said, we do not set specific timetables for the political dialogue”, said government sources from New York a little while ago, attempting a first assessment of the meeting between the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, last Wednesday in New York.

In this context, the same sources emphasized that between the two countries there are several things that can be signed and announced soon and which “are not of a decorative nature”. The same persons pointed out that in the refugee issue we can develop a dialogue on how Turkey can help by explaining that there is a European framework, which, however, does not mean, as was said, that we cannot talk bilaterally. “All the involved Ministers must speak, as well as our port officials,” he emphasized.

Regarding the issue of Freddy Beleris’ continued pre-trial detention, the same sources confirmed that the issue is a top priority for Athens.”
