The Minister of Citizen Protection underlined that it is also a reform for the Greek State, noting that the new identity cards are a document that cannot be forged, cannot be hacked, personal data cannot be intercepted
For new identities that from today citizens can make an appointment at the Police Departments of their region through the id.gov.gr platform for their extradition, spoke, among others, Minister of Citizen Protection, Yiannis Oikonomou on the television station “ANT1”.
“The new identity is an obligation so that the country can keep up with the obligations and security conditions, which – also in Europe – with regulations and directives have been passed and internationally are necessary for us to be able to move safely and not to be they look with “half an eye” when we go abroad. ” emphasized Mr. Oikonomou while repeating that from 2026 onwards all old-style IDs will cease to be valid.
In addition, Mr. Economou underlined that it is also a reform for the Greek State, noting that the new identity cards are a document that cannot be forged, cannot be hacked, personal data cannot be intercepted. He also clarified once again that the new bulletins have neither geolocation nor geospatial “…they have none of all these strange and mysterious things that some people say”.
At the same time, addressing those who are concerned about matters of respect for privacy, personal rights, etc., he emphasized that the new IDs are issued based on the directives, specifications and legal framework of the EU. “If the EU it is famous for one thing, it is for respecting the privacy and human rights of all citizens,” he noted.
Afterwards, Mr. Economou spoke about the phenomenon of juvenile delinquency, arguing that it is not just a matter of policing, it is a matter of overall social functioning, which must be taken into account very seriously. Regarding yesterday’s clash between minors in Kifissia, Mr. Oikonomou said that the main suspect is a 15-year-old boy who was arrested while other students were also identified, noting that “this shows that in addition to policing, we must become better, to manage a total social failure. In the family, in society, in education.”
The Minister of Citizen Protection also referred to the issue of strengthening the moral potential of ELAS where, by order of the Prime Minister, police officers are released from other jobs, from other objectives and return to the field. “This has begun, the first roadmaps for the first 100 have been made and within a month, one and a half, 1500 police officers will go to peak services and it will continue” said Mr. Economou.
Finally, Mr. Oikonomou, referring to the university police, underlined that it was and will continue to be in the universities under the conditions stipulated in the institutional framework. In addition, he stated that there is constant communication with the chancellors on how the university police will be utilized in the new academic year.
“University Police will be there, but I want to say the following which is important. The Police has recently dealt with and handed over for use to the university community a series of squats. Very recently EL.AS. confronted and evicted the oldest occupation in Zografou University of Technology premises. Corresponding actions will always be taken, as required by the Justice and the rectory authorities. The Police does not abdicate its role, so that the university plays the role it should play and in cooperation with the University Police, what needs to be done will be done,” concluded Mr. Economou.
