With the speeches of the leaders of the parliamentary groups, the debate in the Parliament culminates, on the motion of censure submitted by SYRIZA against the government.
The speeches follow the reverse order of the parliamentary power of the parties, with the last speakers, the leader of the official opposition Alexis Tsipras, and the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis who will close the meeting. It is noted that with his proposal, SYRIZA accused the Prime Minister and the government that they proved to be ineffective and dangerous in managing the recent crises (pandemic, accuracy, bad weather).
Messrs. Mitsotakis and Tsipras had the opportunity to confront for the first time yesterday, on the occasion of the position of the Minister of Climate Change and Civil Protection, Chr. Stylianidis. The prime minister had stressed that he prefers apology with sincere self-criticism, rather than any apology from Al. Tsipras for the 120 dead in Mati and Mandra, while the president of SYRIZA had said that “there is no apology without pointing out that something went wrong”
Today’s debate is expected to end at around 9 pm. A live roll-call vote will then be held, with the possibility of a letter-by-vote vote for those on a government or parliamentary mission abroad, or in isolation due to the pandemic. Due to the measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the deputies will come to vote in three groups of 100.
In order for the motion of censure to be accepted, it must be approved by an absolute majority of the total number of Members.
Also, according to the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, “a motion of censure may not be submitted before six months have passed since the rejection of a previous similar proposal, unless it is signed by the absolute majority of the entire number of Deputies”.
