“The debate was a catalyst, in the last week and as the days went by I believed that I would win, that is, from noon on Sunday onwards” the new mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, said on Thursday morning to SKAI regarding his victory in the self-governing elections.

“I think that the citizens preferred a new, positive proposal, not a toxic one, with specific positions, which concerned the neighborhoods, the small everyday issues that are very important, i.e. green issues, cleanliness, sidewalks,” he added.

“I want Athens to have a modern football stadium”

Asked what his position is on the double rebuild, he said: “We want it to continue, it’s priced into my schedule, my only concern is that it moves on. I have thoughts related to the Avenue.”

“To become a state-of-the-art stadium, very nice, bioclimatic. I want to see the people and the agencies.

Maybe create a historical stand for the residents of the area. There is also a big problem with 5X5 pitches, a small pitch could be built, historical. I want it to proceed very quickly”, said Haris Doukas.

“There must be policing to prevent crime”

Regarding the issue of installing cameras, Mr. Doukas stated that “It is not my priority, in Belgium we saw that there were cameras and we saw the shootings. The point is to have the police in order to prevent crime, the goal is safety. Lights, social inclusion, policing and cameras. A total package that I personally will fight for,” he explained.

Regarding the priorities he has set for Athens, he said “First I will open Vasilissis Olgas and then I will create an office to combat energy poverty”

“I am now the mayor of Athens, my duty is to solve problems in the neighborhoods, that’s what I wake up with and that’s what I sleep with,” he added on the program Atariastoi.

Asked if he feels that the self-governing elections are a personal victory, he said: “The victory is the victory of Athens, the message from me is that the problems of Athens have no colors and parties, they belong to all citizens. We want to work with those citizens who want to solve problems”.
