Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined the need to increase funds for Migration and the resources of the Solidarity Fund during tonight’s debate on the revision of the Multiannual Financial Framework during the first day of the European Union Summit in Brussels, according to government sources. He also stressed that climate change and natural disasters require new resources in the Union’s budget, especially for Mediterranean countries.

The same sources recall that Mr. Mitsotakis had formulated this specific position in his speech at the UN General Assembly in New York last September, announcing then his initiative to raise the issue through a letter to the leaders of MED9, so that that there be a joint intervention of the leaders of the South to the President of the European Council.

In fact, the prime minister’s proposal had been discussed at the MED9 Summit in Valletta and had attracted widespread support both publicly and privately. The Greek initiative ended with tonight’s letter to Charles Michel, which is signed by 8 of the 9 leaders of MED9.
