“Hamas is a terrorist organization. It does not represent the Palestinian people”, stressed Mr. Mitsotakis – He noted that the Greek-Turkish relations noted that the positive momentum must be maintained
Kyriakos Mitsotakis in discussion with Francis Fukuyama at the 27th Annual Conference “Economist Government Roundtable”was originally reported developments in the Middle East.
The Prime Minister mentioned that from the beginning Greece had a clear position recognizing Israel’s right in self-defense according to International and Humanitarian Law, emphasizing her need for humanitarian assistance and condemning the action of Hamas. “Hamas is a terrorist organization. It does not represent the Palestinian people,” emphasized Mr. Mitsotakis who referred to his meeting with the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel. Speaking about Greece’s role, the prime minister emphasized that we have the ability to talk with all sides, but not with Hamas, repeating that it is a terrorist organization.
Mr. Mitsotakis also referred to the discussions in which Greece participates with the European states, the UN and the USA on sending humanitarian aid to Gaza by sea, while he spoke of traditional trench warfare reminiscent of the First World War.
“When we talk about our own defensive ability it is obvious that in Europe we have to do more. The concept of Europe’s strategic autonomy is something we need to consider more seriously. Greece spends over 3% of its GDP on defense. One of the issues we discuss when we talk about the European stability pact is to exclude defense spending from the budget. Defense is critical to our freedom and sovereignty”the prime minister emphasized.
He also pointed out the need to learn from Ukraine and the Middle East so that states have the military capability to defend their territorial sovereignty, while he said the EU should spend more resources on defending European territories.
For Greece’s stance on the UN resolution he emphasized that our country aligned itself with the majority of European countries. “We tried to amend the resolution, but we didn’t manage to pass our positions and that’s why we decided to abstain”he added.
He added that Greece was one of the three European countries that participated in the international conference on Egypt and the Palestinian issue and noted that there can be a solution, that of two states.
“In my mind, the only solution can be the revival of the two-state dialogue. That is, the right of the Palestinians to have their own state, without threatening Israel’s right to have its own state.” the prime minister clarified.
Mr. Mitsotakis also said that done cannot imagine a solution to the crisis without the strategic defeat of Hamas and that the Palestinian Authority has proven itself to be effective in governing the West Bank.
Referring to Greek-Turkish relations noted that the positive momentum must be maintained and stated that “Tayyip Erdogan is on the wrong side of history when he refuses to condemn Hamas’ stance.”
Regarding the possibility of a new Trump term in the US, he did not make predictions and spoke about the very strong relationship that our country has built with the US, which recognizes the role of Greece in the region as a pillar of stability.
In addition, the prime minister said that the biggest challenge nowadays is inequality, while he also referred to the role of artificial intelligence and the establishment in Greece of a competent committee of experts.
