The resignation letter of Mr. Papadimoulis published in Avgi follows:

The resignation letter of Dimitris Papadimoulis is detailed
“Comrade President,

Dear Rania,

Dear George,

With this letter I want to inform you of my decision to no longer be a member of SYRIZA-PS.

It was not an easy decision. I received it after much thought, with feelings of responsibility, sadness, but also anxiety for the future of the modern European Left in our country.

35 years ago, together with Yiannis Dragasakis, the late Grigoris Giannaros and Mimi Androulakis, we drafted the “Joint Conclusion” that led to the formation of the Coalition of the Left and Progress, the main political ancestor of SYRIZA.

In 2000, I was one of the co-founders of SYRIZA, an important venture of the Greek pluralist Left.

From 2014 until today, I spearheaded the creation and action of the “Progressive Alliance” in the European Parliament, an important forum for dialogue and joint action of MEPs from the Left, the Socialists and the Greens, with the aim of the cooperation of progressive forces to achieve common goals, which contributed positively to similar political initiatives of the party in Greece and Europe.

The reasons that led me to my decision are purely political and not personal. They relate to political choices as well as issues of collective functioning, style and ethos, which with the decisive responsibility of the new leadership group are leading SYRIZA-PS to an acceleration of its downward course and to an intensifying dissolution crisis. They are drastically distancing him from the SYRIZA that we co-formed, that the Greek people got to know and that I served for decades, certainly taking my own share of responsibility for our mistakes and weaknesses.

In the 2019 European elections, we elected six MEPs, based on a specific program. 273,000 citizens nominated me with their votes, first in votes for SYRIZA MEP. I am marching towards the completion of my third – and last – term in the European Parliament, as I have publicly announced for years. Until then, I will continue to consistently serve the program with which I was elected, as well as the strong popular mandate, looking forward to working with all the colleagues we were elected together, whether they remain in SYRIZA-PS or have made other choices.

I will continue in exactly the same way as Vice-President of the European Parliament, honoring the unanimous support of the Eurogroup of the Left as well as the trust of my fellow MEPs who re-elected me, with a large majority, to the Bureau of the European Parliament for the fourth consecutive time, in January 2022. There, after all, I represent not only the European Left, but also the voice and interests of our homeland, Greece.

I am also submitting my resignation from the position of Head of the Eurogroup of SYRIZA-PS, which I have held since July 2014, following the proposal of Alexis Tsipras and the unanimous support of our MEPs.

It goes without saying that I will continue to participate in the Eurogroup of the Left, which I have also represented for the last 10 years at the Bureau of the European Parliament.

After the completion of my term in the European Parliament, I will continue to support the ideas and values of the modern European Left, as a simple supporter, from the back, away from elected offices.

Yours sincerely,

Dimitris Papadimoulis”
