The council favored the non-participation of Zoe Konstantopoulou due to the defense she has undertaken as a lawyer for the families of victims of the railway tragedy.
Issue of non-participation of her President of Plevsis Eleftheria, Zoe Konstantopoulos in the Commission of Inquiry on the issue of Tempe, “opens” after today’s opinion of the scientific council of the Parliament.
The council favored the non-participation of Zoe Konstantopoulou due to the defense she has undertaken as a lawyer for the families of victims of the railway tragedy.
It is recalled that the Commission had appealed to the Scientific Council at the request of the majority. The MPs of New Democracy had argued that Mrs. Konstantopoulou should not participate in the meetings as the representative of the Freedom of Navigation because of her role as an advocate for the families of the victims.
The council in the eight-page opinion states: “With respect to the composition of the Commission of Inquiry, anyone who has acted as counsel for the defense or in support of the prosecution, or testified as a witness, cannot act as a judicial or prosecutorial officer in this case, and therefore cannot be member of. According to the non-discrimination law, it is of no legal consequence whether the duties of counsel were performed for a fee or not”
The opinion could potentially also mean the exclusion from participation in the Investigative Committee of the parliamentary representative of the ND, and former Minister of Health, K. Pleuris, in case he is called to testify as a witness.
