The benefits of upgrading the Western Attica Suburban Railway network in the section Ano Liosia – Neos S.S. Megaron was presented to the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Production and Trade by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, and the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for Transport, Christina Alexopoulou.

Mr. Staikouras mentioned that the project concerns the construction of a new Suburban Railway branch from Ano Liosia to Megara, within the existing railway corridor of the old railway line to Peloponnese.

“The new line, 34.6 km long, will serve Aspropyrgos, Elefsina, Nea Peramos and Megara, ensuring the interconnection of the settlements of Western Attica with each other. It will serve the freight project, the facilities of the ELPE Aspropyrgos and Elefsina, while there will be provision for passenger transfers on the lines of the existing network”, emphasized the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport.

He added that the project was included in the Recovery and Resilience Fund, under the responsibility of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Implementing Agency, OSE.

“It thus proves, once again, that the projects financed by the Recovery and Resilience Fund concern the many, and the most economically vulnerable”, emphasized Mr. Staikouras.

For her part, the Deputy Minister of Transport stated, among other things: “When Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Aspropyrgos in July 2023, he pledged that the project we are talking about today, the construction of the new suburban railway branch from Ano Liosia to Megara, will be done. The government and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport present a project that will enable all citizens of Western Attica to move to and from the center of Athens in an easier, faster and safer way.”
