“In politics, but also in life in general, there are moments that can determine our entire path. For me, as you know, such a moment, such an event, unfortunately happened a few days ago at the City Hall of Sparta. This incident, as I said, may determine my path, but I will not accept it and it will stigmatize it. That is why let me say a few words with absolute sincerity.
We had gone to Sparta for a purpose. To support the farmers affected by the frost. Before we started the scheduled meeting with the farmers who were affected in the building of the region, I responded to the persistent request of the Mayor of Sparta for a short formal meeting. When he started saying all these incredible things, which have nothing to do with what I believe, but also with what actually happened in 2007, I was in a very difficult position.
As, I think, those who were with me there were in a very difficult position. I felt embarrassed. I felt that I had to overcome the tragic words with an ironic comment and as soon as I could leave and go to the farmers’ assembly.
I used the word epic with the obvious, especially for those who know me and know how I express myself, ironic tone.
It turned out that this irony was not only not enough, but on the contrary completely misunderstood.
More absolute and condemnatory treatment was needed. Obviously I was wrong! I accept this criticism and assume my responsibilities. When I understood the dimensions it took, immediately and without hesitation, from the Council of Ministers in Strasbourg, where I was, with dignity, I put my resignation at the disposal of the Prime Minister.
Because that is my perception of politics. Precisely because this is required by my principles and values, that is, for which I am in politics. These principles and values ​​are mine, the Prime Minister’s, but also the same as the timeless values ​​of our great center-right liberal democratic party.
And to those who – unintentionally – my aforementioned attitude touched or offended me, the only thing I can say today is that I sincerely apologize “.
