THE European Commissionwith a warning letter, calls on Greece to update them Flood hazard maps.
The Commission invites Hellasthe Cyprusτη Bulgariaτη Lithuaniathe Luxembourgτη Romania and Slovakia, update flood risk maps and flood risk maps as required by the Flood Risk Assessment and Management Directive (2007/60 / EC). Flood risk maps should cover the geographical areas that could be flooded, while flood risk maps show the potential negative consequences associated with these flood scenarios. These maps are the basis for drawing up flood risk management plans.
The catastrophic floods in Germany and Belgium in July 2021 were the latest proof of the importance of flood risk assessment and management for the protection of life, livelihoods and the environment.
Member States had to notify by December 2019 of the updates they made to the first flood risk maps and flood risk maps.
The deadline for informing the Commission about the review and updating of these maps expired in March 2020. As the Commission did not receive any information on the process from Greece and the other six Member States, the Commission decided to send warning letters. These seven Member States now have two months to respond and address the shortcomings identified by the Commission. Otherwise, the Commission may decide to send a reasoned opinion.
