Legislative initiative with which they will not be allowed discounts which are offered to products which, before the discount, have been repriced, the Ministry of Development is preparing.

As the Minister of Development recently stated, Kostas Skrekas the legislative initiative will be ready within in the first quarter of 2024 while as he noted in an interview with libre “the problematic and largely misleading display and communication of offers is a perennial problem, which the government is determined to face”.

Specifically, the minister said “the way in which the discounts and offers in the supermarkets are displayed is something that is controlled by the Ministry of Development. In the near future we will be moving forward with a major legislative reform that will change the way companies inform consumers about offers. For example, we will not allow discounts that are offered on products that, prior to the discount, have increased in price and are therefore not real discounts.

In terms in market control he stressed: “The government’s controls to crack down on profiteering are intensive and will continue as long as the inflationary crisis lasts. With a provision that we passed in the Parliament last week, we extended the validity of the law against unfair profit making for the next six months and, if necessary, we will extend it even more.”
