The axes of the re-evaluation of Greece’s defense strategy are developed by the Minister of National Defense in his article in the newspaper “Parapolitika” about the goals and policies of the government in 2024Nikos Dendias.

As he states, 2023 “was a year of rapid geopolitical developments”, which “necessitate a comprehensive re-evaluation of Greece’s defense strategy, in a number of areas”.

“The new and reforming approach” underlines Mr. Dendias is formed in four axes, namely the updating of the national security policy, the strengthening of defense diplomacy, the implementation of equipment programs, the revitalization of the defense industry by strengthening innovation and technology development as well as the improvement of living conditions of executives and changes in tenure.

In more detail, Mr. Dendias emphasizes that “the updated national security policy focuses, among other things, in combination with the lessons of modern conflicts, on technological developments and emerging threats, such as cyber-attacks and threats against information systems”.

For defense diplomacy, he points out that “it is a decisive factor in strengthening the country’s security, through the expansion of its alliances and defense cooperation”, while for the armament programs, he explains that “the seamless implementation of the armament programs that are in progress is a of the big goals of 2024”.

“The acquisition of FDI frigates and Rafale aircraft, as well as the modernization of the F-16s, are upgrading the country’s defense capabilities,” he adds.

For the revitalization of the defense industry, the strengthening of innovation and technology development, he characterizes 2024 as “a year of transformation for the Greek defense industry, with the establishment of the Hellenic Center for Defense Research and Innovation Development”.

“The Center will focus on mobilizing resources and international collaborations to advance research and technology development. The effort to rehabilitate the defense industry could not be missing from the effort to consolidate the Greek Aviation Industry, the supervision of which has already passed to the Ministry of National Defence,” adds Mr. Dendias.

Finally, regarding the improvement of the living conditions of the officers and the changes in the tenure, he said that “in the initiatives to improve the quality of life of the officers of the Armed Forces, we are implementing the construction of 1,400 houses, with an emphasis on areas with a high cost of living, such as the Aegean islands .

Regarding the “Service – Opportunity” program to strengthen the skills of conscripts, he emphasizes that it “includes the development of digital skills and the certified professional training of conscripts, in specialties that will help them find work after their service”.
