In the bill for same-sex couples announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Swiss newspaper reports Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ).

“Is marriage for same-sex couples coming to Greece? The resistance is strong” we read in the title of the report which points out that “it is not only the Church that is showing great resistance. According to a poll by the Alco Institute for the private television station Alpha this week, 49% of Greeks reject the legalization of marriage for same-sex couples. A percentage of 35% declares in favor. But also in his own party, Mitsotakis cannot hope for unqualified support. According to Greek media, out of the 158 MPs of the conservative ‘New Democracy’ there may be less than 100 who will vote for the bill. The prime minister explained that party discipline is being lifted for the upcoming vote.”

The Zurich newspaper also refers to the controversial issue of childbearing with a surrogate mother, pointing out that in Greece it is allowed, “but only for heterosexual couples and single women who are demonstrably unable to have children for medical reasons. Surrogacy is permitted only under altruistic conditions, i.e. not for remuneration. But here too a ‘gray zone’ has developed, in which profitable opportunities for commercial exploitation thrive.”
