Northern Evia was visited on Saturday by the president of the KO of the New Left Alexis Haritsis accompanied by the press representative Kostis Karpozilos.
Mr. Haritsis had the opportunity to talk with representatives from the Taxiarchis fig producer cooperative, with beekeepers, resin producers and forest workers in Istiaia, workers at the “understaffed Health Center and dozens of citizens”, according to New Left sources. The same sources stated that a common finding was “her isolation North Evia and the visible danger of whole regions being desolated as the productive fabric has been disintegrated and the social fabric has suffered a severe blow’.
In his statements, the president of the KO New Left stated that “we are here today first of all to listen to the citizens who are facing two and a half years after the consequences of a disaster, the biggest fire that our country has experienced, which has not yet been dealt with by the Greek state and the government” . “We are here to be their voice,” he said, “we aspire for the New Left to be the voice of the citizens, the voice of the often “invisible” people, the production, the labor, the struggle for survival who are not heard by the political system ». He emphasized that “in order to be their voice, we must first listen to them, listen to their problems and propose solutions”.
He said that the regions of Northern Evia live in an unprecedented isolation and that during his visit he also discussed the issues related to medical care and the road network, as well as production issues, for figs, for resin producers, for beekeepers. “The productive tissue of the region has essentially been dissolved after the successive natural disasters,” he said. He noted that “the climate crisis is present and can only be addressed with a serious plan to support the local economy and shield local societies. Otherwise, in the coming years we will face the desertification of many areas of our country”. “Unfortunately, Northern Evia is currently the most typical example of the danger we are in,” he commented.
Mr. Haritsis emphasized that “with documentation, with seriousness, with a plan, the New Left wants to propose solutions for how the area will be protected and shielded and how these people will be rehabilitated and will restore their productive activities”. In this context, he noted that in the next period the KO of the New Left will testify at Parliament a series of parliamentary questions to highlight the region’s problems.
Sources of the New Left pointed out in this regard that the current question about Thessaly is expected to be discussed in the immediate future, possibly also next Friday, at the Time of Prime Minister.
The same sources emphasize that for the New Left “the need for a new production and development plan that takes into account the facts of the climate crisis, for a serious policy and strategy aimed at shielding and protecting the affected areas , the rehabilitation of citizens, producers and professionals. With seriousness and a plan so that we don’t find ourselves again and again observers in a perpetual cycle of climate disaster.” They announce that Alexis Haritsis and New Left officials are expected to visit Evros in the next period, “another region of our country that experienced an incalculable environmental, social and economic disaster with the fire that consumed the virgin Forest of Dadia”.
