“The railway operates without problems when there is no human error,” said the President of the Railway Federation, Yiannis Ditsas, during his testimony to the Parliament’s investigative committee. With over 25 years of experience as a train supervisor and representing all railway workers, Mr Ditsas noted that no system eliminates accidents.
He replied that he was meeting the Ministers, including Kostas Karamanlis without any problems while he insisted on the General Traffic Regulation saying that it provides for everything: “It is gospel whether we have or do not have systems” he characteristically said. Regarding the Tempe tragedy, he mentioned that fatal mistakes were made that led to the accident and were not related to remote control, etc., stating that the station master put the train on the descent by mistake: “The driver did not take 1001, he did not stop when he went to the descent, he did not he contacted the station master to tell him that he is going from the descent not even with the three next stations” said Mr. Ditsas.
He also revealed that in 2018 he was transferred as a station master at the age of 62, while he spoke of violent transfers of train drivers”.
