The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, sent a message for Holocaust Remembrance Day in a post on social networks, stating that it is up to us to stand up democratically against any form of intolerance.

In particular, the prime minister emphasizes in his message that “the legacy of the Holocaust must be turned into a lasting legacy for future generations, teaching respect for every human being, regardless of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Only in this way will we build a fairer and safer world.”

The full statement of Kyriakos Mitsotakis:

January 27th is a Day of Remembrance for those tortured and murdered in the extermination camps. However, it is also an opportunity to remember the responsibility of all of us to prevent the repetition of horrific crimes such as those of the Nazi regime and its collaborators.

Six million women, men and children, among them 67,000 Greeks, were persecuted and killed just because they were Jews. The Holocaust thus became the darkest chapter of modern history. Symbol of the destructive consequences of racism and blind hatred.

Threats that, unfortunately, return today, with the descendants of totalitarianism “raising their heads” and with cases of anti-Semitism being recorded throughout the world. It is our duty to prevent any attempt to demonize peoples, religions and beliefs.

The seeds of ultimate evil must not sprout again. It is our duty, then, to stand up democratically against any form of intolerance. With the shield of the Rule of Law and the shielding of the fundamental values of peace, freedom and social solidarity.

The legacy of the Holocaust must be turned into a lasting legacy for future generations, teaching respect for every human being, regardless of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Only in this way will we build a fairer and safer world.

And that’s the only way we will actually honor the motto of this day: Never again!
