The investigative committee decided to reject the request of the relatives of the victims of the train accident in Tempi to stop the work of the commission until the completion of the investigation by the ordinary justice.
Representing the majority, the rapporteur Lazaros Tsavdaridisargued that the relatives can morally ask for whatever they want, however the relevant request has no basis in the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament and the Constitution, underlining, however, that the governing majority is interested in doing its job “as best as possible and that the responsibilities to those who have them”.
The request of the relatives was put forward by SYRIZA after a relevant letter they sent to the investigative committee, with Vassilis Kokkalis pointing out that “we must rise to the occasion”, adding that such a decision would not be “offensive” that would show that “we respect regular justice and institutions”.
New Democracy, KKE, Hellenic Solution and Freedom Movement were in favor of the continuation of the work, while the rest of the parties were against. The work of the committee will continue with the examination of the former Minister of Transport during the period of government of SYRIZA (2016-2019), Christos Spirtzis.
