The political leadership of the Ministry of the Interior informed Greeks living abroad about the institution of postal voting.

In the letter sent by the minister and the deputy minister of the interior Niki Kerameos and Thodoris Livanios respectively, reference is made to the removal of all legal restrictions on the exercise of the right to vote of Greek citizens from abroad, which was voted by a large majority by the Parliament last summer.

“We proved, thus, once again that the ties that connect the motherland with the expatriate Greeks are unbreakable – and that we want to strengthen them even more”, emphasize the two ministers.

The entire content of the letter is as follows:

Dear and dear compatriots around the world,

Last summer we had the great pleasure and honor to inform you about the abolition of all legal restrictions on the exercise of the electoral right of Greek citizens from abroad (ie the abolition of the conditions of previous residence and submission of a tax return in Greece). With an increased majority of 208 deputies, the Hellenic Parliament then sent a resounding message to Hellenism everywhere. However, some practical obstacles remained. Citizens living far from major urban centers, for example, needed to travel in order to exercise their right to vote, spending time and money.

It is a special honor for us to inform you that the next most important step has just been legislated by the Hellenic Parliament: for the first time in the history of our country, the postal vote was instituted for voters inside and outside the territory in European elections and national referenda. We proved, thus, once again that the ties that connect the motherland with the expatriate Greeks are unbreakable – and that we want to strengthen them even more.

This measure will already apply from the upcoming European elections of June 9, 2024. You will be able to exercise your right to vote from your home, anywhere in the world, by registering on the electronic platform of the Ministry of the Interior epistoliki.ypes.gov.gr, to which you can log in with TaxisNet codes or, alternatively, with a combination of the details of your valid Greek passport and your national identity card or census number, or through Greek consular authorities abroad, without any further requirements. For further information, please see the link www.ypes.gr/ekloges/ekloges-gia-to-europaiko-koinoboulio/epistoliki-psifos.

With this reform, we are strengthening the institutional tools for the seamless participation of everyone in the elections, especially our fellow citizens who are outside Greece. Now you will be able to exercise this basic constitutional right with ease, without conditions. Fifty years after the restoration of Democracy in our country, the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis is proceeding with a measure which broadens and deepens our Democracy.

We ask you to convey the message to every Greek woman and every Greek man in the place where you live and work for this historic change and opportunity to co-shape, all together, the present and the future of our country.

Thank you in advance.
