With improving changes made by the leadership of the Ministry of Justice and after a two-day long discussion and intense confrontation between the government and the opposition, voted by majority vote, by the Plenary of the Parliament, the bill with the new criminal code.

Only the ND was in favor of the principle of the bill, entitled “acceleration and qualitative upgrading of the criminal trial – modernization of the legislative framework for the prevention and combating of domestic violence”, while all the Opposition parties voted against it.

Both the Minister and the Deputy Minister of Justice, Giorgos Floridis and Yiannis Bougas, defended the new changes, citing, among other things, an important reform step that responds to the needs of society, reduces the feeling of impunity, while achieving the actual serving of the sentence, fights crime and strengthens the administration of justice with a fairer, better quality and more efficient system.

They put special emphasis on strengthening the rule of law and in the transparency of public life, stressing that “for the first time, criminal responsibility and punishment are institutionalized in the Greek legal order, with excruciating penalties for companies that bribe but mainly for politicians who are bribed, which from 100,000 euros now reach 4 million euros ».

For their part, the Opposition parties accused the government of “extreme criminal populism” and accused it of discrediting scientific knowledge, demonizing the opposing point of view, circumventing the rights of the accused while rejecting its argument as completely baseless, that the tightening of penalties fights crime.
