Mr. Pappas clarified that if the Congress prevents a new election of the leader, then the confidence in the person of the president is automatically renewed
Today is the last day of the 4th Congress of SYRIZA-PS, as it will be called upon to decide whether a new leader election will be held or not.
Mr Kasselakis will speak at 11.00 before the crucial votes.
Talking to journalists, Nikos Pappas he said that “everything is in the hands of the delegates”. Responding to a related question, he clarified that if the Congress prevents a new election of the leader, then confidence in the person of the president is automatically renewed according to the statutory deadline.
It is noted that the party’s statute in article 20 provides that the regular Congress – which is scheduled to take place in three years, i.e. in 2026 – approves the nominations for the Central Committee and for the presidency of the party. That is, according to the statute, the term of the presidency is three years, and then it is again up to the statutory bodies to decide.
Based on the above, in order for a new leader election to take place now, the current president will have to resign or a motion of impeachment should be submitted to the ongoing Congress.
Mr. Pappas insists on the proposal he submitted yesterday that the election of a leader should not take place now. He noted that whatever the delegates decide, the votes should be done by ballot box – and not by shouting or raising hands – to avoid tensions.
