Kyriakos Mitsotakis had long expressed the desire to visit Odessa, in order to send a message of support to Ukraine, as well as a message to the Greek element of Ukrainegiven that it is one of the most important centers of Greek education in the Diaspora and the seat of Philiki Etairia, a symbol of historical and cultural ties, government sources state.

The visit was organized under conditions of utmost secrecy for security reasons. It was agreed upon in the last telephone conversation the Prime Minister had with the President of Ukraine at the end of January. A suitable date was then sought through diplomatic channels, the same sources continued.

The Prime Minister underlined Greece’s intention to contribute to the reconstruction of Odessa, the historic center of which was declared in January 2023 World Heritage Site by UNESCOwhile he met with representatives of the Greek diaspora and diaspora.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed support for Ukraine, both within the EU and NATO, which will continue within the framework of Greece’s capabilities and without weakening our country’s defense capabilities.

Regarding Greece’s support for Ukraine’s European and Euro-Atlantic perspective, it is recalled that the President of Ukraine made his first official visit to Greece last August, following the invitation extended to him by the Prime Minister.

In Athens, Volodymyr Zelensky had met for the first time at the informal dinner organized by the Prime Minister with the leaders of the region, in the presence of the leadership of the European institutions. The dinner and the adopted Athens Declaration sent a strong message of support for Ukraine and the Euro-Atlantic perspective of the entire region and an even stronger message that this road for the entire region passes through Athens.

It is noted that following the decisions of NATO – at the Summit of Madrid and Vilnius last August, Greece joined the Declaration of the leaders of the G7 on the support of Ukraine – in which the decisions of the Alliance are repeated and the continuation of support for Ukraine is reaffirmed , both bilaterally and through the EU and NATO, the sources concluded.
