The president of SYRIZA-PS and the mayor of the city commented on yesterday’s attack by strangers against transsexuals, in their first meeting.
The face of Thessaloniki is brighter, more colorful, progressive and progressive and not what we saw on Saturday, with the attack on the two transgenders in Aristotelous Square, and last night’s events on the sidelines of the anti-homophobia rally, the SYRIZA president stressed -Progressive Alliance, Stefanos Kasselakis, and the mayor of the city, Stelios Angeloudis, at their first meeting.
Both condemned the attack against transgender people, the slogans against politicians shouted by people with their faces covered when Stefanos Kasselakis entered the “Olympion” cinema, as well as the wounding of a police officer by the same people a few minutes later. Mr. Kasselakis said that his colleagues informed him about the policeman’s health and wished him well.
“This is not Thessaloniki. The face of Thessaloniki is brighter, more colorful and truly democratic”, said the mayor in the dialogue they had in front of the journalists and continued: “We have a lot of work to do because it is not only the events that have the self-evident police investigation, but they are also the causes that lead especially young people to self-judge, to commit violence and even unnecessarily in central parts of the city. And I think we are all obliged to see it.”
“Indeed, I think, the whole world should know that Thessaloniki is not what happened here on Saturday or last night,” stressed Mr. Kasselakis and added: “Thessaloniki has a role in the progressive development of Europe, no only of Greece. The world in general must understand that every Greek man, every Greek woman must have the right to claim his happiness, her happiness and not at the expense of the happiness of others. It is not a matter of what one does in the bedroom . It’s a matter of how you are born and are happy in your country, in your city without being forced to go to Athens or abroad to be able to live your life. This concerns all Greek men, all Greek women. Thessaloniki is not it must be a co-capital in name only, the co-capital must be in practice. We must have decentralization. Thessaloniki has a big role to play. And we must generally find ways for Thessaloniki not only to stand out abroad, but to become greener, friendlier and of course more interconnected with the rest of Macedonia in order to have development around this pole”.
The president of SYRIZA-PS stated that his party is ready for the mayor to contribute with ideas for highlighting the issues.
Mr. Angeloudis pointed out that the term co-capitalist has long been rejected by the people of Thessaloniki. “We prefer Thessaloniki colorful development dynamic look. We are interested in Thessaloniki standing on its feet to be what it should be, what reflects its historical imprint, a dynamic city throughout time, which claims its future not in competition with Athens but autonomously”, underlined the mayor.
