The German press returns to the ban on entry of Yanis Varoufakis to Germany.
In case the Yanis Varoufakis, secretary of the MeRA25 party, had traveled to Germany to participate in the Conference on Palestine in Berlin, probably the German authorities would have forced him to return back to the border. This at least appears from the exchange of emails between the lawyer of the Greek politician and the German Federal Police, according to data from Frankfurter Rundschau.
However, as stated by taz, which returns to the topic with a new op-ed by Daniel Bax, “it’s still unclear who exactly imposed the entry ban — and why.” As the journalist typically comments, referring to taz’s communication with the German Authorities, it is about the “absolute confusion”.
However, according to the newspaper, there is now also the risk of legal repercussions: “Amnesty Germany is calling for an independent investigation into the actions of the police against the Palestine Conference in Berlin. Freedom of expression and freedom of assembly apply “to all people, even if they criticize German and Israeli government policy”, (amnesty points out), while the limits are “marked by criminal offenses and not by statements that politics does not like”‘.
