Economou: We are against anything that goes against International Law

by

“There is no danger at the moment” regarding the supply of our country with natural gas, said in a TV interview in the news bulletin of Alpha, the government spokesman, Giannis Oikonomou.

Regarding the crisis in Ukrainestressed that “we must be absolutely against anything that goes against fundamental values of international law and constitutes a violation of territorial integrity.”

He pointed out that “they were examined at today’s meeting of KYSEA, among others, and the security of market supply. At the moment, there does not seem to be any reason for concern regarding the supply of our country with natural gas, despite the fact that we import a very significant amount from Russia. Of course, the quantity we import is not through the pipeline that passes through Belarus and Ukraine. “It’s from the southern pipeline that supplies us and other countries with natural gas.”

He added, however, that “we must be prepared for even the most negative scenarios. Such scenarios and possibilities for dealing with the situation, we discussed today at KYSEA. Our country has taken all the necessary measures, whether they concern the increase of the supply with LNG, or concern the operation of the power plants, so that we do not have a problem, or the better management to deal with possible problems.

First of all, we must be absolutely opposed to anything that goes against fundamental values of international law and constitutes a violation of territorial integrity. And what happened to Ukraine, constitutes a violation of the territorial integrity and fundamental rules of International Law. Our country has nothing to fear. Greece is a member of NATO, it has very strong international alliances. What is happening confirms our strategy to invest in strengthening our deterrence capability and in our international alliances. The defense of the country is both a priority and an end in itself. And it’s good for everyone to understand. “Perhaps what has been happening lately will help some people to reconsider their views on our national issues”, Mr. Oikonomou underlined.

On energy prices: “In the face of this situation, no one should feel left alone”

Referring to energy prices, the government spokesman stressed that “we are already facing a very unpleasant and unfavorable reality. Households, businesses, are facing enormous difficulties in terms of energy price increases. We are all concerned that these developments with Russia may further aggravate the situation. We have already intervened in terms of price increases, allocating 2 billion from September until now. About 350-400 million for February “.

“As far as drift“Continued Mr. Economou” we will continue to support the whole of Greek society horizontally. Beyond that, for our fellow citizens who are being tested much more because of the price increases and who are in greater need – as the Prime Minister said – within the framework of Budget endurance, within the fiscal limits that the country can withstand, are planned, measured, weighed targeted measured interventions. When we are ready to announce something specific, both in terms of size and perimeter, we will do it so that everyone knows what to expect. What is certain, however, is that in the face of this situation that is taking shape, no one should feel that he will be left alone. We rely on electricity, we rely on gas. “And to those of our fellow citizens who are most in need, we will exhaust all the opportunities that exist to stand by their side.”

In each case, they have seized it, despite obstacles we can scarcely imagine. ” Already, it is getting worse and worse. We see that we may need to intervene even more, if the prices of gas go up a lot in the next period, and if this affects the prices of electricity. One must follow the rapid developments and plan the measures that our economy can withstand, so that they are both effective and at the same time effective in the world.

Every measure we announce, every support to the Greek society, we are sure that our economy can withstand it. We fully understand the very difficult situation in which the whole of Greek society finds itself, especially those of our fellow citizens who have lower incomes. That is why the support policy is expressed at various levels. “Through strengthening the income, through the continuation of the tax reliefs, the second increase of the minimum wage, through the support in the energy, but also in the planning of targeted supports where we endure and for as long as we endure”, said Mr. Economou.
