In Amsterdam, the largest city in the Netherlands, four armed robberies were recorded in mobile phone shops in 2021, forcing companies to reduce the number of devices they keep in their shops to reduce losses in similar attacks. However, none of the previous 4 robberies took place in a central part of the city.
It is worth noting that hostages are extremely rare in the Netherlands. In 2015, a gunman broke into a television studio, trying to make his demands known live. No one was injured and the perpetrator was arrested and taken to prison.
In 2002, a gunman held hostages in offices he mistakenly thought belonged to Philips Electronics. He ended his life and did not harm a hostage.
