“There is no precedent for vulgarity,” said government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis during a briefing for political editors in response to a question about Mr. Kasselakis’ statement about “ministers who murder children” regarding the tragic accident in Tempe.

“First of all, because it concerns the current president of the official opposition. I think that the subsequent attempt to distort reality, to insult the intelligence of the citizens, makes the whole matter worse. It is unthinkable what was said,” he said.

“There is no reason to go to the European elections and after the European elections in this climate of toxicity of polarization and division” added Mr. Marinakis, stressing that some SYRIZA executives condemned his view while Panagiotis Kouroumblis was in favor.
