The First Vice-President of the Parliament went to Samos, Ioannis Plakiotakisrepresenting the Parliament of the Hellenes in commemorating the start of the Sami revolution of 1821.

According to a related announcement, Mr. Plakiotakis expressed his joy and honor for his presence at the events, stressing that “the uprising in the Eastern Aegean does not only coincide in time with the uprising in the Peloponnese and the Mainland. We find common characteristics in the heroes of that time but also in the beneficial role of the Orthodox faith and our Church”.

“The contribution of Samos to the Revolution was important and deserves every honor to the pioneers Lykourgos Logothetis and Metropolitan Kyrillos and to all those who participated in the struggle and sacrificed themselves for freedom and independence”, noted Mr. Plakiotakis and added: “By honoring their sacrifice we keep the Greece armored and strong, strengthening our deterrent power, and we support the efforts of our people for continuous progress and advancement”.

Io. Plakiotakis: “The transformation of Monastery of Chora in a Muslim mosque is a provocative act”

Referring to the upcoming visit of the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to Turkey in order to meet with the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in the wake of the conversion of the Chora Monastery into a Muslim mosque, Mr. Plakiotakis commented: “The visit of the Greek Prime Minister to Turkey and the meeting with Mr Erdogan was long planned. There is relative progress in Greek-Turkish relations. However, there are also actions from the neighbor that cause tension. The transformation of the Monastery of Chora into a Muslim mosque is a provocative action not only for Greece but for the international community and Western civilization as a whole. An action that alters and brutally insults the history and character of the Monastery, as a world heritage monument and as a point of reference for Orthodoxy. The preservation of the universal character of monuments and the protection of religious and cultural heritage is a clear international obligation that binds all states. For the Greek government, therefore, and I believe for every Greek, this specific issue is important and crucial for it and will be raised by the Prime Minister in the meeting he will have with the Turkish President”.
