The United States encourages the maintenance of calm in the Aegean and the resolution of disputes in accordance with International Law, the State Department notes after the conclusion of the meeting that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had with the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.
Responding to a question from APE-MPE, a representative of the State Department noted that the American presence in the Aegean combined with the cooperation of the US with Athens and Ankara strengthens NATO and helps to counter Russian aggression.
“The United States continues to encourage the maintenance of calm in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean among our NATO allies. The United States’ work with Turkey and Greece, as well as our presence in the Aegean, strengthens NATO and helps counter the Kremlin’s aggression against its sovereign neighbor, Ukraine. Our collective efforts are focused on putting an end to Moscow’s brutal and unprovoked war against Ukraine,” he said.
In this light, he explained that the US welcomes the recent meeting between the two leaders as NATO allies and neighbors. “We encourage these discussions at all levels so that Greece and Turkey can work together to promote peace, security and prosperity in the region and to resolve disputes diplomatically, in accordance with International Law.”
