SYRIZA-PS accuses the government of “complacency in the face of Turkish challenges and undermining the country’s national interests” on the occasion of today’s violations of the Athens FIR.

In his statement he states: “Today’s 11 violations of the Athens FIR by Turkish fighter jets and helicopters, come to refute in the most categorical way Mitsotakis announcements from Ankara about the improvement of Greek-Turkish relations and especially the image that this visit was successful”.

He then argues that “as SYRIZA – PS had warned, the poor preparation of the visit of the TP was seen from the beginning with the provocative reports of the Turkish President about the Muslim Minority of Thrace – contrary to his statements in December 2017 in Athens – but and for the Monastery of Chora. The baton was then taken up by the statements of the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mr. Fidan, regarding the marine parks in the Aegean and Ionian Islands, which he described as a ‘red line’.”

He then asks: “So today, after the new Turkish violations, will the Government finally change its attitude of complacency and downgrading its challenges? Or will it continue to rest on the invocation of the Athens Declaration while Turkey is ostentatiously undermining it?”.

In closing, he argues: “Unfortunately, the dangerously negative consequences of the IX foreign policy of the Mitsotakis government, which with its obsession with the doctrine of the “given ally”, creates the conditions for undermining the national interests of the country, are confirmed once again.
