The government has to face two parallel fronts
By Penelope Galliou
In the long pre-election period that the country is going through in view of the European elections on June 9, the prime minister in almost every speech he makes and in every contact he has with the citizens in the cities he visits, does not fail to refer to the government’s work that has been implemented during the five years of government of ND and to set the goal of continuing this policy, to achieve the “big changes that the country needs” as he emphasizes.
A report that encapsulates one of the important dilemmas posed during the current pre-election period but also the government’s tireless effort to carry out and implement every aspect of its government program, with the four-year term ending in 2027.
The implementation of the government program, despite the pre-election effort and the needs this creates in an extremely demanding period, remains the first guideline from the prime minister to his ministers and government officials, so that nothing is left behind.
The priority of improving the citizen’s daily life, which is emphatically repeated by government lips, is not a “blank letter” but a “social contract” with the citizens and a personal bet of the prime minister himself. Moreover, all his announcements are included in this context Kyriakou Mitsotakis which concern everyday life and ultimately the lives of citizens.
One such issue is the problem of the roof that has been increasing in recent years and policies are already being implemented to deal with it, while others are to come.
During his interview with the “Action24” television station, the prime minister “photographed” new restrictions on short-term rentals, with an emphasis on reducing the total time allowed during the year to rent an apartment through relevant platforms.
He also revealed that resources are already being sought for the expansion of the “My Home” program, which is already running with a large participation of young people and young couples from 25 to 39 years old and concerns the granting of low-interest or interest-free mortgages for the purchase of a first home.
At the same time, recognizing how much accuracy is putting pressure on Greek households, in addition to the interventions aimed directly at the problem, the government considers that a decisive factor with long-term benefits and not of a “fire-fighting” nature, is the increase in incomes, which it has already been promoting since the beginning of this year. “Accuracy will really be addressed, only with further support of disposable income. Better wages. We have already reduced several taxes, but the nominal wages in our country are increasing and increasing at a fast pace” said the prime minister and emphasized that “after all, this is the best response to those who claim that the Greek economy is not progressing”. He assured at the same time that there is still scope for interventions in the way the market and multinationals operate and estimated that with the power that Greece’s voice now has in Europe “we can get results” from the letter he sent to the President of the Commission in order to enter a ” European embankment” in the profiteering tactics of multinational companies.
To governmental planning the further reduction of employer contributions is also recorded. With the aim, as Kyriakos Mitsotakis repeated, of their further reduction, in the first phase, by one unit, “it has a significant fiscal footprint, but while we are planning the medium-term course of the budget, I can tell you that the first tax reductions from the moment we the economy can withstand, they will concern employer contributions” he pledged during his interview.
In fact, he determined the time for a more thorough examination of the measure in question in the second half of 2024 in view of the preparation of the 2025 budget and did not exclude the relevant announcements to be made next September at the TIF.
“I think at TIF we always do our planning for the next fiscal year, you’ll hear more specific things there” he announced.
Although, as government officials report, throughout the pre-election period the opposition parties are bidding on concessions, and inexpensive promises, which would return the country to difficult times and a new bankruptcy, the prime minister faithful to fiscal stability, avoids promising new benefits in the form of allowances for the most vulnerable citizens, focusing on permanent interventions to strengthen them.
And because he himself only commits to what the Greek economy allows and the maintenance of the stability of the country, he criticizes the promises and excuses of the opposition and especially of SYRIZA, calling on it to record with numbers and facts what it promises in the middle of the pre-election period .
A tactic that will not be limited to the conditions of the pre-election period, but also afterwards, goal of Megaros Maximosin addition to promoting his policy, will continue to be the revelation of the unenforceable measures proposed by the opposition, which – as government officials comment – instead of pushing the country forward, turn it back to a past that the citizens repeatedly rejected from the 2019 elections to date.
