After months of intensive campaigning, Greece was elected on Thursday, by an overwhelming majority, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, of the power center of the world Organization.

Greece was elected a member of the UN Security Council garnering 182 votes in the vote for the nomination by the General Assembly of the Organization of the five non-permanent members of the Security Council for the period 2025-26.

With 182 votes in the General Assembly of 193 members — our country far exceeded the “threshold” of 124 votes representing a 2/3 majority.

They were elected Denmark, Greece, Panama, Somalia and Pakistan, while the two-year term starts on 1 January 2025.

The 10 non-permanent seats on the 15-member Council are allocated to regional groups that usually choose their own candidates.

Greece joins the Security Council in a period of major international upheavals and challenges (Ukrainian, Middle East, immigration, etc.).

Greece was twice a non-permanent member of the Security Council, during the periods 1952-1953 and 2005-2006.

“Today is a historic day for Greece for Greece’s footprint on the world. The UN General Assembly voted in favor of Greece’s candidacy for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2025 and 2026

182 out of a total of 188 states that voted voted in favor of Greece’s candidacy. 99% who attended voted. This proves the important capital that Greece has in the world, in the international environment, in international organizations.

And now the time of responsibility begins. After its current success, Greece is becoming a co-producer of international politics and is at a time when there are enormous challenges around us. The big wars that plague the world and are in our neighborhood, but also other important challenges that the foreign policy has a place as a priority during its stay as a non-permanent position in the SA.

The protection of maritime trade, the protection of women and children. These are priorities that together with climate change will be put on the table by Greece in the context of our own foreign policy

Greece’s participation in the UN Security Council will be the epitome of our country’s participation in international events. Greece aspires as a conversationalist with all the states of the world as having open channels with all the states not only with our neighborhood, but with the whole world to be the North South East West bridge. And we will try with all our strength to appear worthy of this great responsibility”.
