The power of the country is confirmed, it is included in the focus of international decisions, the diplomatic position of Athens is strengthened
Greece’s election in security Council it opens new doors to the country’s diplomacy, confirms its power and makes it a powerful factor at the international level.
The participation of Athens in the binding decisions regarding the major issues of the planet means that Greece will be a “co-producer of international politics”, as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, highlighted, highlighting the magnitude of the success.
What does its election mean for Greece? UN Security Council;
1) Athens will be at the center of international decisions and influences and will directly influence, with its vote, the developments.
2) The country, which a few years ago was the pariah of the international community, due to the bankruptcy it had suffered, for the next period will have the opportunity to increase its geopolitical and diplomatic footprint, as it will take an active part in decisions and critical issues.
3) The presence of Greece in the UN Security Council, with two wars ongoing in its area of influence, automatically implies the strengthening of its defense against the tragic consequences or even in the field.
4) Greece will have an active say in the decisions concerning International Law.
5) The Greek diplomacy, as directly involved, will have the opportunity to put directly on the Agenda, issues concerning itself or its allies, with all that this implies at the level of diplomacy.
“Greece will be where the major decisions are made. And now Greece will be able to put the issues that concern it on the agenda, in the international spotlight, in international politics”, stressed the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
His statement follows Giorgos Gerapetritis after the election of Greece to the UN Security Council:
“Today is a historic day for Greece, for Greece’s footprint on the world. The United Nations General Assembly voted in favor of Greece’s candidacy for a non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2025 and 2026. This is a great success. 182 out of a total of 188 states that voted, voted in favor of Greece’s candidacy. This proves the important capital that Greece has in the world, in the international environment, in international organizations.
And now the time of responsibility begins. Greece, after its current success, is actually becoming a co-producer of international politics at a time when there are enormous challenges around us. The big wars, which plague the world and are in our neighborhood, but also other important challenges, which the Greek foreign policy has set as a priority during the two years as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. And this is the strict observance of international law. The new breath that must be given to the settlement of disputes in a peaceful manner.
The protection of maritime trade, the protection of women and children are priorities that, together with climate change, will be put on the table by Greece, in the context of our own foreign policy.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank, in particular, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both the Central Service and the diplomatic mission of the Permanent Mission to the United Nations for a very great effort, which has been made for several years and which was extremely laborious and brought us this important result today.
I want to say that Greece’s participation in the Security Council of the United Nations will be the epitome of our country’s participation in international events. Greece aspires, as a conversationalist with all the states of the world, as having open channels with all the states not only of our neighborhood, but also of the world, to be the bridge between North and South, East and West. And we will try with all our strength to appear worthy of this great responsibility”.
