Everything indicates that we have entered the final stretch for reshuffle, with the cabinet meeting on Friday – What the government responds to Salma’s letter
The ballot boxes of the European elections had messages for everyone. The party staffs are already in the next day, analyzing the popular mandate, and planning corrective actions. As for the government camp, Kyriakos Mitsotakis in his first public reaction didn’t want to “gold the pill”after the loss of 5 points (compared to the previous Euro-elections) announced a course correction and changes, with the scenarios of an immediate structural restructuring having caught fire.
Everything indicates that we have entered the final stretch for reshuffle, with Friday’s cabinet in front of us, with many assuming that Kyriakos Mitsotakis will have announced a new cabinet that will meet on Friday by then. Today, Monday, the prime minister had several contacts with his colleagues, while some ministers also passed by the Maximos Palace, among them Mr. Gerapetritis, who stayed for quite some time according to information from SKAI, Mr. Hatzidakis in the morning and Mr. Georgiadis in the afternoon. The result and causes of the ND percentage are being discussed, while according to information, Mr. Mitsotakis admitted to his colleagues on Sunday evening that there were failures in the handling of political issues. It remains to be seen whether these fixes will not include only political changes, but also changes of persons who will be called upon to serve them in the future.
It is noted that on Tuesday the prime minister will give an interview to a television station, but a reshuffle is expected Wednesday or Thursday so that the reorganization can be announced, the swearing-in of the new structure will take place, and the cabinet will meet with the new composition on Friday.
“She’s to blame”
Sure though, it is not only the persons to blame for the election result. Several government officials have already come out, but various issues, such as the event, have also been discussed behind closed doors that the issue of same-sex marriage came up at the given time, the issue of accuracy that Mr. Mitsotakis himself spoke about in his statement, but also many everyday issues. What they consider positive about the government is that most of those who had supported the ND in the national elections did not “cross over”, did not vote for another party, but remained abstinent and have room for “repatriation”.
Complaining has already started, Mr. Marios Salmas made a post on Facebook and sent a letter to Mr. Mitsotakis requesting that the KO be convened. Apparently a percentage below 30% “opens some mouths” within the KO. Generally, the bodies are formed and convened when there are such events, they were commenting from the government.
Mitsotakis statement on Sunday night
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the Greek women and men who trusted us once again. Our MEPs will give their best to the mission that awaits them, in a European Parliament where unfortunately the rise of the extreme right is a reality from which even our country is not exempt.
I will not hide the truth. Our party did not reach the goal we had set, nor am I interested in arguments such as that the difference from the second party is the largest in the history of the European elections. We knew from the beginning that this election would be very difficult. Citizens who supported us in 2023 knew that now, no government is being elected and perhaps they faced this battle differently. In the pre-election period as well and despite my own efforts, there was a lack of substantial reflection on the future of Europe and on the position of our country in it.
While, there were certainly many voters who wanted to protest about issues that concern their daily lives, mainly accuracy. I respect their choice, whether it was expressed with an unprecedented abstinence for the country, which perhaps makes it difficult to draw conclusions, or with the choice of smaller forms. But mostly, I hear their voice and their command and I hear it loud, “we trust you but try harder”. And this is what we will do in order to move faster, steadily, closer to Europe.
In Europe’s two largest countries, France and Germany, strong governing parties retreated dramatically. But in our homeland, Greece, New Democracy remains dominant and one of the largest center-right parties in Europe. 50 years since its establishment, it is the only force in the country that can provide stability to the political system in these turbulent times, which it owes to its members, its executives, our friends, I want to thank them once again from heart.
From now on, these elections become the starting point of a new path towards 2027. That is why from tomorrow we turn with greater intensity to the problems, for more work and fewer weaknesses, for greater effort and for smaller failures. We have three years ahead of us without elections.
So just as the Greece of 2024 is, I believe, much better than that of 1019, so the Greece of 2027 will be much better than today. We want it, we can and we will achieve it. Thank you”.
