The European People’s Party is going to support Ursula von der Leyen’s candidacy for a second term at the head of the European Commission at the ongoing informal dinner of European leaders in Brussels, as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized in his statement arriving at the Synod.

Specifically, Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated:

“At the informal European Council which will start shortly, we will have the first and I hope the last discussion on the distribution of the important positions of responsibility for the next European cycle. The European People’s Party (EPP) comes to this negotiation as the winner of the European elections and rightfully claims the continuation of Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen’s presidency of the European Commission. Beyond that, of course, the issues we will discuss do not only concern the distribution of positions but also the essential policies that the EU will have to implement in the coming 5 years”.

Referring to the political agenda promoted throughout the pre-election period by the European People’s Party, the Greek Prime Minister focused particularly on the issue of the competitiveness of the European economy, the issue of immigration, the common defense policy, but also the way in which the “green” transition will ultimately not hurt farmers and ranchers. “I am cautiously optimistic that we will be able to conclude this discussion today and that we will have some positive news after the council concludes,” said the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Asked why he supports a second term for Ursula von der Leyen for the presidency of the Commission, he replied: “Because she was the Spitzenkandidat, our main candidate, because the European People’s Party won the European elections and because she is a very good President of the European Commission.”
