With both sides throwing shots and exchanging accusations, the war between SYRIZA and the government continues over the financial proposals of the official opposition party after the refusal of the Speaker of the House to introduce the law proposals for discussion and processing in the competent Committee.

The president of the SYRIZA Parliamentary group, Sokratis Famelos, accuses the government of unacceptable methods, characterizing the invocation by the Speaker of the Parliament of article 73 par.3 of the Constitution as a communication ploy to serve the Government in order not to introduce the financial proposals to the competent Committee.

The entire statement of Mr. Famellos:

We denounce the unacceptable method of the President of the Parliament to prevent the discussion of the proposals for the law on accuracy and taxation that we submitted to the Parliament.

The provisions of the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament are clear (articles 85 et seq.) and expressly provide for the discussion procedure of the proposed laws in the competent Committees. It is our constitutional right as the opposition to exercise legislative initiative.

For the law proposals we have submitted, the General Accounting Office of the State has submitted its reports on 23.5.2024. Consequently, there is no obstacle for the process of their discussion in the Parliament to proceed.

The invocation by the President of the Parliament of article 73 par.3 of the Constitution to limit our parliamentary right is not correct and is another communication trick to serve the Government.

It is clear that the SYRIZA-PS law proposals do not fall within this limitation.

The strategies of the Speaker of the Parliament and the government do not convince anyone. Today they proved that they are afraid to discuss our proposals because they know that they are well-founded and targeted. Today the government proved that it invents anti-institutional pretexts to escape.

And it is infuriating that the Speaker of the House tried with twisted arguments to mislead the accredited journalists of the House.

We inform Mr. Mitsotakis and Hatzidakis that SYRIZA-PS is not going to retreat. We claim and demand the implementation of the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament and the discussion of the SYRIZA-PS law proposals in the committees of the Parliament. And we will exhaust every institutional provision to do so. And if the government insists on violating the Rules of the House, the Official Opposition will come wherever it is called, as it always does, to highlight the validity of our elaborated proposals as well as the anti-popular and unfair policy of the government in favor of oligopolies and against households and the vast majority of businesses.
