Nikos Dendias at the Extraordinary Council of EU Foreign Ministers

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, will participate today, Sunday, February 27, 2022, at 19:00 (Greek time) in the Extraordinary Council of Foreign Affairs (SEY) of the EU, which will take place via video conference.

The Foreign Ministry is convened again in order for the Foreign Ministers of the 27 EU Member States to discuss the situation in Ukraine in the context of the ongoing Russian military offensive.

Assistance to Ukraine and sanctions to Russia

The EU High Representative is expected to propose to ministers the use of the European Peace Mechanism to assist the “heroic Ukrainian army”, according to a written statement.

Josef Borrell’s proposal follows a direct request from Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba to EU foreign ministers during a speech last Friday.

The High Representative will propose the provision of equipment, such as ammunition, but also fuel and medical supplies.

European foreign ministers will also discuss the announcement of additional tough economic sanctions by a number of countries and the European Commission.

These include the blocking of a number of Russian banks by SWIFT, the blockade of the Russian Central Bank by developing its international reserves and actions against the people and entities facilitating the war in Ukraine.

Today’s discussion of the EU Foreign Ministers will pave the way for the rapid adoption of all necessary legal acts, according to the relevant announcement for the teleconference.

In addition, Mr. Borrell will propose a number of additional possible measures to provide assistance to the people of Ukraine.

Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Janes Lenarsic will brief on EU humanitarian aid to Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in neighboring countries.

The press conference of the EU High Representative, Josep Borel, is expected after 21.00 Greek time.

Greece sends defense equipment to Ukraine with C-130

Defensive material with two C-130 ships within the day our country in Ukraine, in consultation with Greece’s partners in NATO and the EU, showing in practice its solidarity with the tested Ukrainian people.

According to government sources, Greece will send ammunition, Kalashnikov rifles and launchers.

This decision was taken this morning in a meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximos Palace. The Minister of National Defense Nikos Panagiotopoulos and the head of GEETHA, Konstantinos Floros participated.

Humanitarian aid will also be sent to Ukraine, accompanied by Deputy Defense Minister Nikos Hardalias.
