In a smooth climate, it is expected to be held tonight at 11 pm the meeting of Kyriakos Mitsotakis with Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Washingtonon the sidelines of the NATO Summit.

As Manolis Kostidis reported from Istanbul, the Turkish side informed yesterday that Erdogan will have meetings with Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Olaf Soltz and Viktor Orban today.

The expectations from the meeting are not high, we do not expect much, commented Manolis Kostidis and added that its duration is not expected to exceed 12-15 minutes maximum.

This is a routine meeting, during which the good climate that has developed recently after Greece and Turkey will be reaffirmed, the positive agenda will be confirmed.

Besides, the two leaders have an appointment to meet again in September.

However, the meeting takes place in the shadow of yesterday provocative statements of the Turkish presidentwho said that “the ‘TRNC’ is already a full member of the Turkic states in our eyes.”

“At the last Susa Summit, as you know, ‘Northern Cyprus’ was there, it participated in this Summit,” Erdogan said to a related question on the sidelines of a press conference before his departure from Ankara to Washington, where he will participate in the NATO Summit.

The Turkish president added that “now, in the following process, we are trying to figure out how to bring ‘Northern Cyprus’ to the point of full integration. We are developing this, particularly with the Turkic states, where we have a high level of relations between the Turkic states. Also, we are improving the relations of the ‘president’ of ‘Northern Cyprus’, Mr. Ersin, with the heads of these states as much as possible.”

From Washington, in conversation with the former US ambassador in Athens Daniel Speckhardt, o Kyriakos Mitsotakis he said that there have been difficult times in the last three years with Turkey, noting that in the last year and a half, things have improved significantly.

“At the same time, we recognize that some of the fundamental Turkish positions regarding the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean they have not changed radically. But the fact that we’ve had 16 months of quiet, in terms of not having violations of Greek airspace, that we’re cooperating better on immigration, that we’ve actually made an agreement that allows Turkish citizens to travel to the Aegean islands and take the their visas very quickly, these are all some positive steps,” he added.
