Statements of UN diplomatic sources after the meeting of Kyriakos Mitsotakis with the UN Secretary General in New York – The prime minister underlined the fact that Cyprus remains divided 50 years after the tragedy of ’74.
The Cyprus problem was at the center of the Prime Minister’s meeting Kyriakou Mitsotakis with the Secretary General of the UN which took place at the headquarters of the international organization in New York.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the Secretary General and her personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin to restart the talks on the Cypriot .
Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined the fact that Cyprus remains divided 50 years after the tragedy of ’74.
This is – as he said – an unacceptable situation and he emphasized that every possibility must be exploited for a just and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue based on the decisions of the UN Security Council.
According to information from diplomatic sources in UN the General Secretary during his meeting with the Greek Prime Minister stated that he is willing to exhaust all the possibilities he has for the two communities to reach the resumption of the dialogue.
No information was given at the meeting between the two men about the content of Ms Holgin’s report, it was said that the report presents the current situation on the island.
However, what the same diplomatic sources make clear is that there is no recommendation by the General Secretariat for a four- or five-part meeting, which Athens does not accept either.
In the next immediate period there are proposals to announce his Antonio Guterres who since Wednesday July 10 has been studying the report delivered to him by his personal envoy, Maria ‘Angela Holgin.
The Secretary-General is not encouraging both sides to continue efforts to sit at the dialogue table, while there is a proposal to discuss Ms. Holguin’s mandate during the UN General Assembly in September.
It is noted that on Thursday morning (July 11) Mrs. Holgin met with the Greek and Turkish Foreign Ministers in Washington, while today she asked to meet with the American Secretary of State. According to information disclosed to be accepted by the US Undersecretary of State for European Affairs James O’Brien at the State Department.
At the Guterres – Mitsotakis meeting, Greece’s assumption of the position of non-permanent member of the Security Council (2025-26) was also discussed.
The Prime Minister informed Mr. Guterres about the Greek priorities and underlined that Greece wants to be a bridge between the South and the North, the West and the East, as it is a member state of the EU, of NATO, and talks at the same time with the countries of the Global South.
