The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis participated today, Thursday at the 4th Summit of the European Political Communityin his Oxfordshire United Kingdom.
Within the framework of the Synod, the Prime Minister took part in the plenary sessions and in a round table discussion on “Defending and Securing Democracy”. After the completion of the work, he attended the reception given in honor of the leaders by the King of the United Kingdom, Charles III.
“We are meeting here today and at the same time a very important vote is taking place in Strasbourg. I hope that Ms. Ursula von der Leyen will be re-elected as President of the European Commission. It is very important in these difficult times to have continuity, stability and experience” said the Prime Minister coming to the Synod.
“The agenda he has set in relation to the priorities of the EU, the issues of competitiveness, the common European defense, the protection of the European way of life, the immigration issues, are important issues and will be discussed at the European political community meeting, is issues that concern all European countries” he added.
Also, the prime minister underlined that in two days from today on July 20th we will have the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus which resulted in the possession of a piece of the island. “It is the last occupied and divided European region and I hope that eventually the issue will be resolved and discussions between the two communities will continue under the auspices of the UN always in the spirit of the Security Council resolutions that define a possible solution,” he stressed.
On the margins of work, the Prime Minister had a brief meeting with his British counterpart, Keir Starmer.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of Greco-British relations and welcomed the UK’s desire for a productive relationship with the EU. The two leaders agreed to have a bilateral meeting soon.
The Prime Minister also had a meeting with the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani. During the meeting, regional developments were discussed, while the Prime Minister repeated the support of Greece in the European perspective of the Western Balkans.
