The president of SYRIZA-PS refers to his visit to Cyprus on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the invasion and occupation of the island
During his visit to Cyprus on the occasion of the completion of 50 years since the invasion and occupation of the island, refers to his post on social media, the president of SYRIZA-PS, Stefanos Kasselakis, underlining: “We’re never going to forget.”
In his post he says: “Fifty years have passed since the illegal Turkish invasion of Cyprus. 50 years of occupation, with Nicosia remaining the only divided European capital. I visited Cyprus to listen to the pain of the families of the Missing, the Displaced, the Imprisoned. I met with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, His Beatitude the Archbishop of Cyprus, etc. Georgios, the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Dimitriou, comrade G.G. of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, the Minister of Defense of Cyprus, Vasilios Palmas. I shared with everyone my anxiety about the Cyprus issue, as they did. A special place in my mind and heart was my visit to the Pancypriot Organization of Undeclared Prisoners and Missing Persons. How can one empathize with the pain of people who for 50 years have been trying to find out the fate of their loved ones? The only thing I can promise them is that I will do everything in my power, in Greece and Europe, so that the families themselves can be relieved, and the souls of the missing can be vindicated. And of course, I feel proud that I visited the ELDYK together with the Honorary Chief of GETHA Admiral Apostolakis and saw up close the zeal and self-sacrifice with which they guard Thermopylae. I pledge to the Cypriot people that we, SYRIZA, will continue to support with the same fervor a just and sustainable solution for the Cyprus issue. In the context of the decisions of the UN Security Council and with a restart from the point where the talks were interrupted in Crans Montana in 2017. Our goal, a solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, for the benefit of the entire Cypriot people, without guarantees and occupying troops. We will never forget”
