“Ankara’s choice to deploy five warships in the area, just a few miles from the limits of Greek territorial waters, raises serious questions about its intentions,” says the PASOK representative.
For a direct violation of the Declaration of Athens by Turkey, on the occasion of the provocative actions in the open of Kasos, the State Member of Parliament and representative of PASOK speaks in his statement, Dimitris Manzos.
His statement in more detail:
“THE presence of Turkish warships in the Kasos – Karpathos straits constitutes yet another provocative action on the part of Turkey, aimed at escalating the tension in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Ankara’s choice to deploy five warships in the area, just a few miles from the limits of Greek territorial waters, raises serious questions about its intentions and its attempt to challenge our sovereign rights.
Just a few twenty-four hours after the Turkish fiesta to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the illegal invasion of Cyprus, Ankara directly violates the letter and spirit of the Athens Declaration, undermining all steps towards the normalization of Greek-Turkish relations.
Our country’s military response was necessary, but not sufficient. The Government must inform the political leaders and immediately proceed with diplomatic actions to mobilize the international community, and in particular our European partners and our NATO allies, about these dangerous actions on the part of Turkey.
We must not leave unanswered this challenge, which offends not only our national rights based on international law and the law of the sea, but also stability and security in the wider region”.
