The meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, and his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, on the sidelines of the informal meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers in Brussels, ended a while ago.

According to diplomatic sources, the meeting lasted one hour and took place before the informal lunch of EU foreign ministers with the Turkish minister. The meeting took place at the Offices of the Permanent Representation of Greece to the European Council. EU-Turkey relations were discussed.

The same diplomatic sources reported that during the discussion, Mr. Gerapetritis emphasized thatGreece supports Turkey’s European perspectivebut the European acquis, the sovereignty and sovereign rights of all member states and the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU should be respected. Greater coordination between Turkey and the EU is required on this.

In the part of the discussion about the Greek-Turkish relations, the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, raised all the issues that during the previous period created tensions on behalf of Turkey, pointing out the need for a good climate, avoiding tensions and respecting international law. The upcoming meeting of the leaders of Greece and Turkey in New York was also discussed, where the schedule and next steps of the dialogue will be discussed.

Finally, regarding the Cypriot, Mr. Gerapetritis emphasized the need restart the dialog in the context of the decisions of the UN Security Council and taking advantage of the opportunity presented by the improvement of Greek-Turkish relations.
