Americans are currently hiding their anger about Turkey and the Brics
The issue of Turkey’s possible inclusion in the Brics alliance may mean a breach of the country’s obligations towards NATO.
According to what SKAI analyst Michalis Ignatiou said, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller refused to comment on the reports about Turkey’s intention to join the alliance which, among others, includes Russia and China.
Asked by the SKAI analyst, Mr. Miller said he would not comment, but said “Turkey continues to be an important ally of the United States with which we work and cooperate on a number of issues.”
Another reason why the Americans do not wish to comment, according to Mr. Ignatiou, is because it is still information and they are waiting for Turkey’s official announcement before taking a position.
“What we journalists got is that the Americans were disturbed by the information because they themselves do not have official information. They know, as was said, about Turkey’s intention to join the Brics, not about a decision”, the SKAI analyst estimated, adding that “and the Turkish president has not hidden his desire to join the Brics. These are countries that are mostly hostile to the United States.”
A question that was raised is whether Turkey’s participation in the group, if confirmed in practice, could mean a breach of Turkey’s obligations towards NATO.
“We have been told that BRICS is not a military organization, but a political one, but since countries hostile to Washington are participating, one could argue that the Statute of the Western Alliance, which is informally in an undeclared war, is likely to be violated. with Russia, one of the two main pillars of the Brics group”, emphasized Mr. Ignatiou.
