The “green light” to schedule hearings for all 26 designated commissioners was given today by the Committee on Legal Affairs of the European Parliament, as it announced the completion of the check for conflicts of interest of the candidate members who will be invited to form the new European Commission.

The hearings of the designated Commissioners will take place from 4 to 12 November.

According to the detailed schedule, on November 4th the hearing in the European Parliament of the designated Greek commissioner will take place, Apostolos Tzitzikostaswho is slated to take over the Sustainable Transport and Tourism portfolio.

The hearing of the Greek commissioner will take place from Committee on Transport and Tourism of the EPon Monday, November 4 at 7.30 p.m. (Greece time).

On November 12, the hearings of the six executive vice-presidents of the European Commission will be held: the Italian, Raffaele Fito (Cohesion and Reforms), the Estonian, Kaya Kalas (High Representative of the EU), the French, Stéphane Cezournet (Welfare and industrial strategy), the Spanish Teresa Ribeira (Clean, Fair and Competitive Transition), the Finnish Hena Virkunen (Technology, Security and Democracy) and the Romanian Rohana Minzatou (People, Skills and Readiness).

The leaders of the European Parliament’s political groups also approved the written questions prepared by the relevant committees, to which the commissioners-designate must answer by 22 October.

How is the process done?

Each hearing will be followed by a meeting in which committee chairs and stakeholder representatives (coordinators) will assess the performance of the Commissioner-designate they have just heard.

After the evaluation process is completed, the Conference of Committee Chairs will assess the outcome of all hearings and forward its recommendation to the Conference of Presidents. The latter will exchange views and decide whether to close the hearings at its meeting on November 21. It will also decide to place the vote for the House as a whole on the plenary agenda.

The new House of Commissioners must be elected by a simple majority vote in the Plenary, by roll call. The vote is currently scheduled to take place during the (25-28) November session in Strasbourg.

The new European Commission is expected to take office in early December at the earliest.
