O full respect for minority rights is at the center of Greece’s bilateral relations with Albania, as well as the neighboring country’s accession to the European Union. This was underlined by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his meeting at the Maximos Palace with a delegation of the Democratic Union of the Greek National Minority “OMONIA” and the Party of the Union for Human Rights.

The Prime Minister discussed in detail with the representatives of the minority key issues that concern our expatriates in Albania.

In particular, special emphasis was placed on securing the right of self-determination of members of the minority, through the adoption of relevant legislation by the Albanian state, especially with a view to conducting a population census next autumn.

It was also discussed ongoing cadastral registration in Albania, which should fully and unequivocally safeguard the property rights of minority members. Kyriakos Mitsotakis reaffirmed the full support of the Greek government to our expatriates and informed them that a regulation for the increase of the National Pension of expatriates and returnees will be submitted within the week and will be voted on next week.

The meeting was attended by the General President of DEEEM OMONIA Vassilis Kagios, the President of the Human Rights Party Evangelos Doules, the Vice President of DEEEM OMONIA George Tzoumakas and the General Secretary of DEEEM OMONIA Dimitris. From the government side, the director of the Diplomatic Office of the Prime Minister, Ambassador Eleni Sourani, the ambassador, Anna-Maria Boura, and the Deputy Government Spokeswoman, Aristotle Peloni, participated.
