London, Thanasis Gavos
The Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom Liz Trace she said in a joint press conference with her American counterpart Anthony Blinken in Washington that the invasion of Vladimir Putin’s forces in Ukraine causes “enormous pain and suffering.”
He noted that Russian President does not record on the ground “the progress he was planning”.
He said that President Putin was surprised by the unity of the West and the severity of the sanctions, while at the same time “the brave Ukrainian people have surprised him with their determination and leadership.”
The British minister said that the United Kingdom seeks the complete exclusion of Russia from the international banking system SWIFT, as well as the termination of the use of Russian oil and gas in all G7 member countries. “We will not calm down until Putin fails in Ukraine and until the country’s sovereignty is restored,” he added.
Mr. Blinken commented that he does not remember another time when there was so much unity of policy and principles between the US and the UK.
As added by Mrs. Τρας“We know from history that the attackers understand only one thing and that is the power.”
He stressed that if there is no response now, other would-be intruders around the world will be encouraged. “And we know that if Putin is not stopped in Ukraine, there will be terrible consequences for European and global security.”
Asked about Ukrainian President Zhelensky’s ongoing request for a no-fly zone, Liz Tras said the best way to protect the air force was to provide anti-aircraft weapons, referring to the British Defense Secretary .
Ms. Tras also described the afternoon attack on a hospital in Mariupol as “disgusting, reckless and horrible.”
For his part, Mr Blinken likened the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the bombing of Britain by Nazi aircraft.
When asked about sending Polish fighters in Ukraine through the US government, as suggested by Warsaw, said it was up to each government to make its own decisions, adding that such a settlement had “some complications”.
Both ministers said that the Allies’ active involvement in the war, whether by a no-fly zone or by sending troops to Ukrainian territory, “would almost certainly lead to a direct confrontation” with Russia.
“The United Kingdom is not considering this,” said Ms Track, with Mr Blinken adding that “it would not be in the interests of our countries or Ukraine.”
The US Secretary of State, moreover, described as “outrageous” the offer of humanitarian corridors leading refugees to the territory of Russia and Belarus.
