The Greek-American Democratic Member of Parliament talks to SKAI about how the result of the election will affect Greek-American relations
Greek-American Democratic Congressman John Sarbanis spoke exclusively to SKAI and Elli Kasolis about the American elections, criticizing Trump’s extreme rhetoric.
At the same time, it sends a message about how the result of the ballot will affect Greek-American relations.
The interview in detail
Harris and Trump are making their final sprint before Election Day. According to the polls it will be a close fight. What do you think about it? About the results?
It’s obviously a very, very “close” election. We knew that. And now they are tied according to the polls. Of course, opinion polls do not necessarily determine the outcome of an election. Citizens must go to the polls, which they have already begun to do. (Kamala Harris) I think she’s done a really good job of getting her message across in a short amount of time. I also believe that he has shown that he has the character to lead our country. She is firm, she is respectful in the way she handles people. He has a calm voice and style. That’s what I like to see in a leader. I think character matters a lot when it comes to who will occupy the office of the presidency.
Donald Trump remains a prominent figure in American politics. Given his divisive nature, what impact do you think his speech has on political polarization in the country?
Unfortunately, I think he is contributing to the division in the country because he likes to stir up trouble. He is very confrontational. I think it’s taking advantage of new social media platforms in a way that’s divisive. He tends to put people down instead of uplifting them, which is a style of government that I don’t think is good for the country.
But this election is one of the most divisive in recent history.
But the division that we’re seeing, frankly, has been there since the last election, and it’s just carried over into this election cycle. One of the reasons there is division is because many of the issues that have divided the country over the past four years continue to affect it. There has been constant debate about what happened in the last election, where the results were clear that President Biden won that election. And yet President Trump, former President Trump, continues to question the outcome of the election. But this division in the country continues because the rhetoric that Trump has introduced into our politics continues to polarize and emphasize a lot of misinformation and misinformation. So, that’s why we’re in a very divided situation again.
Regarding how will the election of Grace or Trump affect Greece?
Certainly, when you look at Congress, the relationship between the United States and Greece and Cyprus is important, that Greece and Cyprus play a very critical strategic role in that region of the world, and that it is in the interest of the US to maintain this strong bond between our nations. So, I’d like to continue to see this hold true. I just think that a President Harris would bring a foreign policy that is more stable, more predictable, more respectful of the others sitting at the table.
