Mendoni: “Yes” to Russian artists, “no” to Russian propaganda through art

by

We are not against Russian artists, but in any means of strengthening Russian propaganda through art, the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, repeated from the floor of Parliament, answering a topical question of SYRIZA MP, Panos Skouroliakos, on the subject of “exclusion of cultural in Greece in the context of Greek sanctions against Russia “.

You can understand what message Would Greece send, at a time when Russia is pounding an independent state, Ukraine, to applaud the Bolshoi state ballets in Athens, live, at the Concert Hall? Ms. Mendoni asked, noting that Greece has no problem with works by the Russian intelligentsia, as can be seen from the inclusion in the program of the National Theater, “Autochira”, by the Russian writer Nikolai Erdman. We are not opposed to Russian artists, but to any means of boosting Russian propaganda through art, as well as the Russian budget that finances military operations against civilians. It is not possible to be non-participating, stressed Ms. Mendoni.

For his part, Mr. Skouroliakos said the government’s policy is to silence, and ban what he disagrees with. The Minister of Culture forbids the distribution of works of art, said the SYRIZA MP, while conveying a complaint by the pianist Panos Galanopoulos, that the recital of the Russian pianist, Grigory Sokolov at the Concert Hall “was deactivated by the system”, while other countries are done normally. He also spoke about the falsification of a text by the EU Ministers of Culture and Audiovisual. According to Mr. Skouroliakos, a “non-existent decision” was added to the Greek Ministry of Culture regarding the severance of relations between the EU and Russian cultural organizations. This is an immoral operation of misinformation, at a time when Russian artists are in danger, suddenly speaking out against the invasion, said Mr. Skouroliakos.

In response, Ms. Mendoni referred to an announcement by the Concert Hall about the reasons for the postponement of the concert of G. Sokolov stressed that there was no interference in the official text of the European Ministers of Culture, and called on Mr. Skouroliakos to see the document posted on the ministry’s website as to whether there was forgery.

Finally, he said the curse, the official opposition MP he must throw it into violence and inhumanity of the war declared by the Russian state against Ukraine, “and not to launch delusional myths and deceptive lies for opposition purposes […] “Obviously your anti-war reflexes are in hypnosis”, said the Minister of Culture and concluded: “Greece is the West. It is Europe. Europe believes in the democracy, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries, within their internationally recognized borders. This is Europe. ”
